In the Spring of 1979, when Shepherd of the Hills, San Antonio, TX opened a Mother's Day Out program, a little boy named Blaine Boyette attended on the first day.   Blain only came once.  A few hours after he returned home from Mother's Day Out he was struck by a car in front of his house and never regained consciousness.   Blaine had not been baptized. His family asked Rev. Dan Mueller, pastor at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church to baptize their son.  The baptism took place in the pediatric intensive care unit at University Hospital in San Antonio.  Blaine died eight days after being hit by the car.  This stained glass window memorializes Blaine.

Blaine's father, Ron, designed the window and helped to assemble it.  In his design, Blaine's father tried to make the window look like a page from a child's coloring book.  The colors of the window are vivid and, like a child's coloring book, not always consistent.  The hands of Jesus are not the same color as his face.   When the window was installed, SHLC was worshipping in the building where the window is located.  Today that space is the library of the congregation's school.   Children sit by the window every day for story time and other activities.  The window beautifully depicts the good news of the Savior's  love for all people, including children.

While Blaine's death was tragic, SHLC regarded it as a confirmation of its decision to open a school and related ministries to children.  Without that decision, it's likely the congregation never would have met Blaine and his family.  Because of that decision, the congregation was blessed to be there when the family needed it and to offer God's means of grace.  Blaine's family belonged to SHLC for many years until they moved out of the area.  His grandparents are still active members and his cousins attend the congregation's school.

Texas Church Extension Fund has been blessed to be a part of the building process at Shepherd of the Hills.
